An introduction to sewing and upcycling for those interested in fashion, sustainability and enhancing their skills to remaking. This course is suitable for beginners but some prior sewing experience may help.
The 2 day course will be a deep dive into all things upcycling from hand sewing projects with scraps to larger full remakes. We will cover different techniques like patchworking, how to use the sewing machine, fabrication and how to approach a range of upcycling projects.
Day 1: will be a general day of upcycling: In the morning you will learn how to use the sewing machine & overlocker and make a scrunchie. In the afternoon, we will be learning different upcycling techniques like patchworking and if you have any pieces you would like to upcycle or get advice on how to upcycle and bring them along and we can remake them. This could be anything from something you want inspiration on how to remake or a broken item you’d like to fix). If not, we will be using the patchworking skills to create an item of your choice (cushion, bag or charms).
Day 2: will be learning how to upcycle second hand materials into a short sleeve summer shirt. For this, please bring fabric of your choice (I’d personally recommend a tablecloth, tea towels, bed linens). This is a great project to build your confidence on the sewing machine, how to read a pattern and learn different techniques of how to make a shirt which can be applied to future projects.
There will be only 2 people in the class so it will be a really friendly and intimate environment where you can ask any questions about starting and building an upcycling brand, advice on how to upcycle particular items and gain skills and confidence on the sewing machine.
